How I Turned My Insecurities Into a Thriving Business

Esthetics by P Brown: Birth of The Tribe

This is about the inception of Esthetics by P Brown, not just the skincare, but the brand itself.  It started in a 350 sq. ft. room in Nashville, TN.  It was in this sanctuary that I put all of my insecurities on display and those who matched my vibration, showed up.  I know that sounds like something Oprah may say, but that’s exactly what happened.

While I had a great job, nursing, I was starting to fall in love with caring for my skin. I entered aesthetics school and by the end of my coursework, I was told, “Don’t expect clients to follow you.”  Which may be true for some… don’t expect clients to follow you – unless this is your purpose!  I was told, “Don’t expect clients from here to support you, they’re not going to leave the school, the prices are so cheap.”

But by the time I left, it had gotten to the point where people would only show up to the school for a facial – if I was there.  As a matter of fact, they would text me ahead of time because they knew I was nursing and say, “hey are you in school today?”  I would say, no.  I had a small treatment room that I used at the school and when I was there, the school would stop my clients and question them.  My clients said they were asked,  “What is she doing in there?” Why don’t you come any other time?  What’s going on… is she  giving you stuff?  These were my clients!  God sent me people who needed me and my clients would say, Porsche,  “I don’t know what those people think you’re doing back here, but I told them, it’s a facial.”

The Tribe Met My Insecure Needs

So, I left the school with 30 clients.  My intent was to pour into my clients what I wished someone would have poured into me and that was much more than skincare.  I wanted to be a part of a tribe in the purest sense of the word, I wish I had someone who:

Celebrated my wins with me.

Mourned my losses with me, and encouraged me to move on.

Called me beautiful, acknowledge the queen in me.

Let my husband know he’s handsome without something sexual or flirty, you know?

Let the queen in me speak to the king in you.

Those first 30 clients grew into 500 in the first month, and then 1700 in the first year. And now, 8 years later, we’ve served 217,000 people around the globe.  They come from all over the world and I love it!  I’m a military brat, and this has allowed me to continue celebrating cultures and having pot- lucks and just being a family, having an extended family.

The Tribe Became Established

In the tribe, these are people I can rely on and be accountable.  I can say, “Hey tribe, there was a tornado and some of our tribe (members) are without and this is what they said they need.”  Then, know that we will come together, stronger than ever.

Doing what I love allows me to work with my tribe and clean up their skin conditions.   I have the pleasure of helping people with Hyperpigmentation,  Grade 1-3 or 6 Acne, and I get to function in my purpose.  I do so, in the establishment of Esthetics by P Brown (EBPB).  We know it’s not just the skincare, it’s the fact that you know when you go on this journey with EBPB, you know you’re accepted, and there is nothing you can say or do that wouldn’t end with us wrapping you in love and being there for you, in your greatest moments, as well as your lowest.

Whether the journey is Natural Hair, (because my natural hair girl has been doing it for 20 years, she was doing it before it was the thing to do), or Nail Care, or you get your body snatched (you know I call it my “Build-a-Body” center because we’re doing Butt Lifts, Ab Contours, Post-surgical Care Treatment, whatever it is, our tribe knows they’re home, they’re accepted.

Boss Lady Brunch “A Seat at the Table” Recap

Prominence, prestige, and power exuded from these three Boss Ladies and we had them completely to ourselves.  If you missed the Boss Lady Brunch, “A Seat at the Table,” you definitely missed out.

The event started with us mingling around the appetizers and talking amongst ourselves—taking time to meet all of the attendees.  We were then strategically “Seated at the Table” with a business mogul where we learned insider secrets and how we could benefit from applying the secrets.  The meal was deliciously catered by “Simply Mellow,” you may be familiar with Simply Mellow, she’s most famous for her tantalizing preserves.

Our moderator was the beautiful Kris Osborne, you may know her as Fairy Lash Mother on Instagram.   She contributed to the questions the ladies in the audience posed to the panel.  Many nuggets were shared from these dominators along with practical applicable steps.  It was obvious by the input and advice the panel shared, these ladies had been running their businesses for years and while they experienced their own bumps in the road, they successfully landed on their feet.

The event was hosted by Molded from Clay Life Ministry, a 501c3 non-profit organization geared towards creating opportunities in the community for young girls, women and female veterans.  Their mission is to empower, develop self-appreciation, and self-esteem, while enhancing young girls, women and female veterans lives, academics and career skills.

THE PANEL:

DANIELLE MCGEE

Danielle McGee owns Black Business Boom and has been a business owner and working in the community for many years.  Black Business Boom is a movement dedicated to driving customers and revenue to small Black owned businesses by offering coupons on their web-based platform (similar to Groupon for Black Businesses). You may have seen her out networking in the community as she also leads the Facebook Group Black People Making Moves which is a closed group that allows the black community to come together and discuss topics in Nashville.  Through the Facebook group, you learn about events, ways to support the black owned businesses, and discuss issues that affect the black community.  Danielle shared some valuable information on how we build our brands, how to better assess our skills and how to work with our strengths.

SHEKIA RENEA

SheKia Renea has built a following on social media that is phenomenal.  Currently with 283,000 you tube followers; she’s leveraged it and is building an empire that allows her the free time to effectively be a full-time mom.  She is a Brand Mogul and a Realtor in her spare time.  And she was giving out tips and tricks with social media and building your brand and attracting your audience.  She was very transparent and educated us on the power of transparency, while encouraging us and showing us how to build transparency into our brand.

PORSCHE BAILEY-BROWN

And of course, our own, Porsche Bailey-Brown co-owns Esthetics by P Brown.  She is a multi-talented professional who co-owns the only black-owned full-service day spa in Nashville.  This Ethnic Skincare Expert has clients in 5 countries and 49 states, her business is debt-free and continues to grow.  Her rapid growth allows her to also be a portal as she rents shared office spaces for upcoming businesses to flourish and she runs an Incubation Center that provides necessary resources and training for start-up businesses to help them develop efficiently.  Porsche taught us how to reach our clientele, refine our target market, and asked questions that made us think about our role and purpose in the business arena.

Boss Lady Brunch 2020: “A Seat at the Table”

I am addressing a question asked on Instagram regarding the Boss Lady Brunch held January 25, 2020, if you are reading this, it’s not too late to buy your ticket.

QUESTION: How is this beneficial to me as a single room esthetician trying to grow my career?  And why should I invest $100

ANSWER:  $100?  Quit playing with me… when I first graduated, I spent $3000 in honing my craft, $3000 in mentorship, and $3000 in developing and sharping my skills.

This is why, a lot of women will say they want “A Seat at the Table,” I’m that person that gets sick of hearing people say, “You’re where you are because of the resources you have.”

OK, that is a valid statement.

So, when you come to the Boss Lady Brunch, I’m giving you my resources.   When you come to the Boss Lady Brunch, my mentors (who make more money in probably a week, a month, a transaction, than a lot of women will make in a year), are going to come and give you advice.  Not for $100, because that money goes to the non-profit (Molded from Clay life Ministries).  They are going to do it because of my relationship with them.  And we are going to help you strategize and grow your business so that it’s a business that is income-generating.  Not a hobby.  If you are making less than $3000/ month while you’re trying to grow a business, the IRS considers it a hobby.  What I want to do is make you a BOSS.

A SEAT AT THE TABLE

We call this Boss Lady Brunch “A Seat at the Table,” because, whether you realize it or not, a lot of you are already sitting at the table, you just don’t understand with whom you are sitting.  Then, you are making critical errors and burning bridges because you treated someone based off who you assumed or perceived them to be without first realizing who they were and how their strengths can fortify your weaknesses.

I have a young lady who is building an app, that is giving Groupon a run for their money and it is strategically focused on building black businesses.  And by the end of 2020, it will be nationwide.  Her 2021, projections put her overseas, and she is going to tell you how she got there and then she is going to help you figure out how to get your business there.

Then I am very proud, because at this brunch, my cousin is coming to the table. Tribe, she humbles me.  My cousin has built a following on social media that is phenomenal and then she leveraged it to build an empire that allows her to be a mom full time.  As a single parent, it allows her to be a mogul and a brand, and then allows her to live functioning in her passion and her dreams and make good money doing it.  She is going to come to the table and she is going to give you those tips and tricks and then she is going to give you opportunities at the table, to help leverage them.

And I don’t feel I need an introduction, but I’ll introduce myself anyway.  I am Esthetics by P Brown.  I have clients in 5 countries and 49 states, and God has been good because my business is debt free, we continue to grow, we have an Incubation Center and I am bleeding resources for you all.

IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE $100 IS WORTH IT: YOU DON’T WANT TO EAT!

That’s what it is…  It’s not me trying to be anything but real.

Then I’m going a step further, especially for the ones who’ve been to the previous Boss Lady Brunches, I am strategically putting my mentors in the audience and there will be at least one at each table.  I’m not going to tell you who they are, while they are giving business advice you won’t know if they are part of my mentor tribe, who’s help me grow to be an international empire, or not, and then at the end, I will introduce these ladies.  After they have given you, more than just A Seat at the Table, because you will eat with them: we are going to feed you, we’ll toast up mimosas with you, we’re going to celebrate you as a woman and a business owner, and we are going to give you our intellectual properties, for $100.  And then my team will follow up with you to ensure that you were able to apply what you learned and got what you needed.

So, to answer the question, it’s worth it if you are a single room esthetician but you:

  • still have to work a day job.
  • you don’t know how to leverage your assets.
  • you don’t know how to leverage your intellectual property.
  • you don’t know how to leverage your skill set to pay yourself your desired salary.

LET US HELP YOU

Let me tell you how to reach your clientele, let me tell you what your COB is, let me help you refine your target market, let me help you not give your pearls of wisdom to swine, or cast bones to dogs, please let me help you,

If you are trying to build your brand and leverage both social media and your brick and mortar, or just social media, please let my cousin help you.  She doesn’t need to help you; she’s doing it because there’s room for everyone to eat.  And if you need to learn how to mind your business, and count your coins, let my girl show you, she’s not just going to show you, she wrote a book on it.

Invest the $100.  Come to the table with the wealthy mentality, because a wealthy man will ask me what is my return on investment? And essentially sis, that’s what you’re asking me.  With what we are going to give you, when you pay $100, you should be able to walk out that door and make $1000 or better.  That’s the wealthy mentality, your return on investment.  A poor man, a broke mentality will say, do you know what I can do with $100? I can buy a new pair of shoes…

… I’m eating.  I’m not just at the table, I’m building the table, I hope this answered your question tribe.
