4 Easy Tips: Face Masks

The question below was sent to me on one of my social media sites.  I’m sharing my response to help anyone who may be curious.

Question:  How often should I use a facial mask?

First let me say facial masks are used for a variety of purposes.  They can be used for hydrating, moisturizing, and restoring pH balance, to name a few.  My answer to this question is that it depends on the purpose of the mask.

If you are seeking to reduce any of the concerns below, here are some suggestions that may easily be found in your kitchen.

TO REDUCE ACNE EBPB Honey

Try honey and baking soda. The baking soda will balance pH levels and the honey will act as an anti-inflammatory.  Use this mask once a week and then build up to twice a week as needed.

TO REDUCE INFLAMMATION

Try turmeric and honey. Honey is good for anything inflamed including Rosacea and Eczema.  Honey is an anti-bacterial agent that has calming and healing properties.  Use this mask 1-3 nights a week as needed.

TO REMOVE / REDUCE DEAD SKIN

I would not suggest using a mask. Add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to your cleanser.   The brown sugar will dissolve as you massage it into your skin reducing any microscopic cuts in the skin.  Do this no more than twice a week.

TO LIGHTEN OR TIGHTEN SKIN

Try lemon juice, powdered milk (lactic acid) and honey. Only use this once a week then give your skin time to recuperate due to the high acidity of the mask.

I caution you to only keep the masks on for 15 – 20 minutes.  Anything left on your skin more than 20 minutes may trigger a chemical reaction such as peeling, burning, or redness.  Then you will need to come to see me or schedule a virtual consultation for further assistance.

If you need help with any (thing) discussed above like specific measuring for recipes or you need help determining your skin type, please feel free to schedule a virtual consultation with me and I will gladly assist you.

My followers are growing so rapidly, I thought I would take a moment to officially re-introduce myself,

I am Porsche Brown, The co-owner of Esthetics by P Brown Day Spa:  A Full Service Green Day Spa conveniently located in Nashville, Tennessee.

I am an Ethnic Skin Care Specialist with a passion for problematic skin.

That being said, most of my clients come to me because they have darker face patches or darker skin tones, or maybe someone down their ancestral lineage had some issues that are affecting them.  I also attract clients who need help fixing hyperpigmentation, eczema, rosacea, skin breakouts or issues of that nature.

Other clients I attract, are those who have visited a dermatologist who was not able to fully address their problem or the clients were not pleased with the dermatologists’ results.  I am very much known for the concept, “when the conventional does not work – try the unconventional.”

Does it matter where I live? NO – I have clients in 7 countries, and 47 states.

ebpb pb globeI love all of you and appreciate all of you … I call you “My Tribe.”  I do virtual consultations for those who are not able to physically make it into the Day Spa.  The virtual consultations allow me to see (for myself) what is going on with your skin.

If you have time, please watch my “Chemical Peel” video on You Tube then you will understand that this journey is a personal one for me.  I personally have Eczema and Grade 2 acne.  When most people see me either personally or virtually, they cannot see my skin issues.  Why?  Because I am very religious with my skin care routine … I baby my skin and I do not let just anyone put just anything on it.

What other services does the Day Spa offer?

Fall Skin Care Tips

3 Easy Tips for Transitioning your Skin Care Routine During Fall

As you may have noticed, the leaves have changed and we are officially in the season-Fall.  Therefore, I would like to assist you in keeping your skin looking flawless without interruption by the seasons.  These 3 tips should help you make a smooth skincare transition:

1. Invest in the Proper Cleanser.
Cleansers do not come in One Size Fits All (seasons).  People like to tell you they do, especially if you are purchasing over the counter (OTC) products.  That’s how those OTC manufacturers make their money.  You may have heard me say this… the thing about professional skincare products is that they have smaller molecules so they’re better able to penetrate the skin and give you the best results.

The reason you come to a professional like me, is so we can give you a facial and determine your skin type; therefore, you should be seeing an aesthetician at least once every season.  You’ll need a facial for all four seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Your skin will not always stay the same; it will change with the weather.  Unfortunately, if you invest in the wrong products for your skin type, it will throw your pH levels off and it will take a professional longer to get them back in balance.

2. Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate
Remember, we are currently in the season of Fall and we are headed into the winter season, so your skin will get dryer and the skin cells will build-up.  This is when you will want to exfoliate.  You may exfoliate daily as long as you vary your exfoliants by using a light enzyme, a light acid, and a light manual scrub.  If you don’t know what I am talking about or you are not familiar with these terms, please either leave comments or contact us directly.

EBPB Brown Sugar exfSide note: For those who are pregnant – since the skin is sensitive and even more-so with a little one inside you – you will want to exfoliate with brown sugar.

3. Moisturize
Moisturize with the proper moisturizer. If you have oily skin – please do not use an oil-based moisturizer.  Make sure you get a moisturizer that has a water base.  If you have dry skin, use a more emollient moisturizer.  However, if you don’t know your skin type, contact us at the Day Spa and we will answer your questions and take care of your needs.
